Direct lending refers to the intensive multi-step process which encompasses the sourcing, structuring, underwriting, ongoing management and potential work-out steps associated with originating commercial loans directly with borrowers. In a direct lending model, all facets of this process are handled solely by the lender. In other lending models, these facets are handled by multiple unaffiliated entities. If executed properly, this model provides the direct lender with greater control over each loan, which ultimately results in more advantageous pricing and the potential for a higher return on invested capital for investors.
