- Senior loan returns in the secondary market softened a bit this week, following the strong positive return pace at the start of this month. For the seven-day period ended January 28, the S&P/LSTA Leveraged Loan Index (the “Index”) return was -0.12%, with a decline in the average Index bid price of 5 bps, to 97.44.
- Optimism in the loan market has led to some tightening spreads in the loan market, brining many issuers back to refinance their existing loans. So far this month, repricing volume stands at $64 billion. As we look ahead, the forward calendar (net of anticipated repayments) appears to be picking up with $7.7 billion of new supply expected to hit the market, compared to about $1.3 billion last week.
- In the secondary market, momentum eased following the strong rally earlier this month. This primarily a technical shift driven by the new-issue market, which continues to dominate with repricing and refinancing transactions.
- Inflow activity into retail loans funds continued this week, as another $540 million entered the Lipper FMI universe of loan funds for the five business days ended January 25 (LCD estimate). On the CLO side, five new vehicles were issued during the week, bringing the early YTD figure to $5.3 billion.
- There were no defaults in the index during the week.

General Risks for Floating Rate Senior Loans: Floating rate senior loans involve certain risks. Below investment grade assets carry a higher than normal risk that borrowers may default in the timely payment of principal and interest on their loans, which would likely cause the value of the investment to decrease. Changes in short-term market interest rates will directly affect the yield on investments in floating rate senior loans. If such rates fall, the investment’s yield will also fall. If interest rate spreads on loans decline in general, the yield on such loans will fall and the value of such loans may decrease. When short-term market interest rates rise, because of the lag between changes in such short-term rates and the resetting of the floating rates on senior loans, the impact of rising rates will be delayed to the extent of such lag. Because of the limited secondary market for floating rate senior loans, the ability to sell these loans in a timely fashion and/or at a favorable price may be limited. An increase or decrease in the demand for loans may adversely affect the loans.
